What is Delightfully Difficult?
A weekly’ish newsletter about motherhood, midlife, and the social norms that shape our experiences.
Drawing on my personal experiences, observations, and policy expertise, I’ll cover topics that include:
Career shifts
Single motherhood
Mental load
Divorce
Perimenopause
Reclaiming yourself
Public policy (paid leave, childcare, etc.)
Social supports (or lack thereof)
….Whatever else is on my mind!
In other words, all things motherhood and midlife.
Let’s challenge the status quo together.
About Allison Hiltz
I’m a results-oriented policy professional and former Aurora City Councilmember with more than a decade of experience in public policy and advocacy at both the state and local levels. My passion is for problem-solving and connecting the dots on complex policy solutions, but specifically around the challenges faced by moms in the workplace and at home.
From 2017-2021, I served as an At-Large Councilmember in the City of Aurora, CO, where I passed laws and policies that included creating Council’s first parental leave policy, ending the local pink tax on menstrual care products, working to reduce cancer exposure in the fire service, sponsoring a non-police model of response to mental health crises, holding private immigration detention centers accountable, and creating a literature-based alternative sentencing program.
Prior to my work in Aurora, I lobbied at the state level for AARP and also spent a few years working for the National Conference of State Legislatures, where I educated and engaged lawmakers in all 50 states on the importance of data-driven decision making and evidence-based policymaking.
